Better Place was founded by entrepreneur Shai Agassi in 2007 with the aim to help create transportation solutions that were no longer reliant on fossil fuels. Since the barriers to the deployment of electric vehicles were their prices the problems associated with recharging the battery, Better Place developed several new technologies. It sold to consumers in Israel and Denmark the Renault Fluence Z.E. (zero emissions) without a battery, and it rented batteries to consumers against a three-year plan it offered for battery recharging or swapping. After deploying charging posts and swapping stations, and in spite of a world-wide marketing effort, Better Place went bankrupt in 2013.
